Thousands of far-right activists took the streets of Bratislava, Saturday, to protest against the 'Islamification of Europe' and migrants from Middle East and Africa. Protesters chanted "Slovakia to Slovaks" and held banners and posters with slogans such as "Slovakia is not Africa" among others. Counter-protesters had to bear objects like beer cans and flares thrown at them. However, the heavy police presence prevented more severe clashes. At least one police officer was injured. Corruption in Slovakia increased so highly that we, the students, have to do something immediately." SOT, David Straka, Student and protest organiser (Slovak): "The State just ignores our problems. Our country is not for us but for the oligarchs. We demand a change but they are saying it's not possible." Not to be confused with Slovenia. It is surrounded by Austria to the west, Czech Republic to the northwest, Hungary to the south, Poland to the north and Ukraine to the east. Slovakia is a modern democratic country and is a member of the European Union. The main reasons to visit Slovakia are its natural beauty, vivid history and great opportunities for relaxation (and due to the small size of the country, it is quite easy to combine all three). The Capital of the Slovak Republic Bratislava, also referred to as the Beauty on the Danube can not only boast interesting history but it also is the centre of the most dynamically developing region of central Europe at present. Slovakia is after Austria the second country in the middle Europe with the largest amount of forests? Almost 40% of its territory is covered by forest, while in Austria it is only 6% more. Bratislava and Vienna are two closest located capitals in Europe. There is only less than 60 km between them. According to some sources, the European geographical central point is considered to be near the roman-catholic church of St. John the Baptist above the village of Kremnické Bane. Slovakia has many winter resorts with beautiful natural views. Downhill skiers, snow...
Travel video about destination Kezmarok in Slovakia. Kežmarok is located in the north east of Slovakia in front of the fabulous scenery of the High Tatra. The town’s fifteenth century Gothic castle is located at the edge of the Old Town and its external walls form some sections of the city wall. At the beginning of the sixteenth century it was owned by the Thököly family and was given its present day splendour in full Renaissance style. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Kežmarok was a centre of rebellion against the Viennese Emperor. Its Baroque castle chapel is a fine building and was renovated in 1658 at the time of the Protestant Oppression. The castle survived the changing times and is one of the town’s main attractions. In the centre of the old town is the Roman Cathol...
Travel video about destination Trnava in Slovakia. Trnava, in south west Slovakia, is well-protected by a three kilometre-long city wall. Under the protection of the sturdy wall, the monastery and church of Holy Jakobus were created in the fourteenth century with the support of the House Of Anjou. The monastery complex was then considered to be one of the largest religious buildings in the country and served as a place in which God could unite the world. The new city centre contains an imposing Neo-Classical theatre and a tower that was built in 1574. From a height of twenty-nine metres, those in the watchtower were able to warn of any threat of fire. The Jewish synagogue was built in 1831, badly damaged during the Second World War and then neglected for several decades. It now contains...
Sitting on both sides of the Danube in the southwest corner of Slovakia, BRATISLAVA is a festive city, with meandering streets and tiny but grand buildings. With its rural atmosphere, on a hot afternoon a flock of sheep wouldn’t look out of place grazing on Františkánske Square. The Old Town showcases the skill of Slovak town planners, who crammed a city’s worth of palaces, shops, cafés, pubs, restaurants, museums and churches into a few blocks.
